Joe Jackson will always be known as the lovelorn observer whose coffee is getting cold in Is She Really Going Out With Him? But since that first megahit in 1979, Jackson has established himself not only as a pop songwriter but also as a first-rate musical adventurer who has explored jump-blues, reggae, and Latin rhythms.
His talents have led him to score movies, compose classical suites, and write A Cure for Gravity, which he describes as “a book about music thinly disguised as a memoir.”
His latest album, Rain, finds Jackson reuniting with bassist Graham Maby and drummer Dave Houghton, the rhythm section that helped make him famous on records like Look Sharp! and I’m the Man. The disc, his first of new material since 2003’s Volume 4, features 10 originals ranging from some punk-like rocking out on King Pleasure Time to a vintage ’50s-style piano-trio jam on Uptown Train.
