Festival Vancouver’s special 2008 programming spotlight is directed at “Music of the Americas”, and that’s why we’ve invited a pair of accomplished North and South American choirs to present the largest and most dramatic choral performance in this year’s Festival.
Grupo de Canto Coral is an internationally-renowned choir from Argentina, and they’ll start this special event with songs that reflect their country’s vibrant musical heritage. The Vancouver Cantata Singers will add tuneful Canadian repertoire, and the two ensembles will also sing as a massed choir.
The climax of the evening will unite the two ensembles to present Brahms’ own choral and piano transcription of his powerful German Requiem. Joining them will be acclaimed Canadian soprano Donna Brown and baritone Tyler Duncan, plus two Argentinian pianists at a single keyboard – just as Brahms intended.
This performance is made possible with the support of the Chan Endowment Fund of the University of British Columbia.
