Tzong-Ching Ju, Artistic Director of the Ju Percussion Ensemble, is the powerhouse behind the remarkable interest in percussion music that has blossomed in Taiwan over the last two decades.
Ju studied at the Vienna Academy of Music, but returned to Taiwan in 1986 to found his now-famous percussion ensemble. Today he’s known and admired as a music visionary, and for creating a country-wide music education system.
Under his direction, the 13-member Ju Percussion Ensemble has won a multitude of devoted fans around the world. They love its innovative playing of Western percussion instruments, as well as Chinese gong-drum music and other forms of Asian traditional music. Each of the ensemble’s performances is a mesmerizing display of sound, rhythm and dramatic choreography – totally original and unforgettable.
The Festival is proud to bring this spectacular group to Vancouver for its first visit to the city since 2001.
This performance is made possible with the support of the Chan Endowment Fund of the University of British Columbia.
