Known all over the world as “Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares,” the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir is an ensemble of rare artistic gift and enormous popular appeal.

The choir was created fifty years ago to preserve and enrich the heritage of Bulgarian solo folk songs with arrangements that highlight the beautiful timbres and irregular rhythms of the tradition. The women have since become international stars, whose hypnotic chant now circles the globe.

Their ability to transform sounds into strange vocal colours, incorporating ornaments, glissandos, and complex rhythms and chords, both mesmerizes and thrills audiences. The choir won a Grammy award for its “album II” in 1990, and received a Grammy nomination for its album “Rituals” in 1994.

This choir’s story is one of success. Their beautiful, mystic voices have helped dissolve the separation between East and West, of young and old, of pop and classical music.

You won’t want to miss this magical experience!

This event is part of the celebration of UBC's 100th Anniversary.

In 1908, the provincial government proclaimed the University Act to establish British Columbia's first higher education institution. From this act of foresight, UBC has grown into one of the world's best public Universities by richly serving its provincial, national and global communities through its core mission of teaching, research and service.

Throughout 2008 UBC will celebrate 100 years of achievement with a diverse line up of events. Visit the Centenary website www.100.ubc.ca for all the details.
