Pygmalion - the acte de ballet by Jean Philippe Rameau and music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier - will delight audiences in this performance featuring music and dance from the French Baroque.
Pygmalion was first performed at the Opéra in Paris in 1748 and is generally regarded as the best of Rameau's one-act pieces. The story is based on the myth in which the sculptor Pygmalion falls in love with a statue of a beautiful woman he has carved.
This presentation is made possible through the generous assistance of the Chan Endowment Fund of the University of British Columbia, the Drance Family Fund, and several anonymous donors.
