Fig Trees: A Film by John Greyson

Mon., November 16 at 7:00 pm
Royal Bank Cinema
Presented by UBC Critical Studies in Sexuality

This operatic tour-de-force reinvents the documentary. The protagonists of Fig Trees are two of the patron saints of AIDS activism: Tim McCaskell, a founder of the Canadian AIDS Action Now, and Zakie Achmat, who in 1989 refused to take anti-retroviral drugs until they were made generally available in South Africa.

The story is a grand-scale narrative of personal heroism in the face of evil personified by politicians and pharmaceutical company executives.

Fig Trees premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this spring, where it won the Teddy Award for best queer documentary.

Made possible through the generous support of the Jane Rule Endowment for the Study of Human Relationships.
