Chan Centre Connects Series - Arts as Activism

*Please note that this film will be shown downtown at Pacific Cinémathèque, 1131 Howe Street.

Mexico 2005
Director: Beto Gómez
Colour, 35mm, in Spanish with English subtitles. 90 mins.

Director Beto Gómez has crafted a visual and musical valentine to several of Mexico’s most celebrated female singers, including Chavela Vargas, Lila Downs, Eugenia León, Astrid Hadad, La Negra Graciana, and Iraida Noriega.  They are interviewed on topics ranging from their music to their thoughts on politics, love, relationships and equality, intermingled with oftentimes powerful concert footage.

There are common political threads that all unite these women, whose music has sometimes served as a platform to protest corruption and machismo.  Hasta el último trago... corazón! is a crash course on what’s vital (not commercial) in Mexican music” (Adapted from plume-noire.com).

The Chan Centre Connects Series presents outreach activities related to visiting artists performing at the Chan Centre.  The theme of the Connects Series this season is “Arts as Activism: The Transformative Power of the Arts in Society.”
