String Fest: Tribute to Mstislav Rostropovich
Chan Shun Concert Hall
UBC Chamber Strings and Cello Ensemble perform a special
tribute to cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, champion of human rights and
the former music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in
Washington.
This tribute to Rostropovich includes a work for large cello ensemble by Heitor Villa Lobos, Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence with the Borealis String Quartet with UBC students Thomas Beckman, viola and Luke Kim, cello; and Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8 for string orchestra. This program also features the world premier of Light from the South, for jazz trumpet, piano, drums and string orchestra by composer, arranger and trumpet player Alan Matheson.
The instrumental chamber ensembles at UBC perform in small groups of approximately three to eight members. These musicians have the opportunity to perform a wide variety of pieces from baroque, classical and romantic to modern pieces suitable for small ensembles. These ensembles perform a variety of pieces from madrigals, motets and cantatas to contemporary pieces.
